BeeAfrican: A Journey from Passion to Purpose

BeeAfrican was born from a unique moment of inspiration (when honey bees visited its founder, Mems Ramaila at her farm in Brits, South Africa) and a deep-rooted desire to make a difference. Founded in 2019 by Mems Ramaila, a dynamic professional with diverse expertise in law, labour relations, management consulting, farming, and research, BeeAfrican is more than just a honey company—it's a catalyst for change.

As a honey aggregator, BeeAfrican plays a crucial role in the local agricultural landscape, collaborating with a network of beekeepers to enhance honey production standards sustainably. We collect high-quality honey from small-scale producers, supporting local livelihoods and offering consumers ethically sourced products.

Empowering
Communities

In 2022, Sibanye Stillwater partnered with BeeAfrican to launch the Marikana Beekeeping Project, aiming to integrate sustainable beekeeping into the Marikana communities in North West, South Africa. This initiative, part of the Marikana renewal process under its "Create" pillar, aims to uplift the local economy and transform lives through sustainable beekeeping. The Marikana Beekeeping Project provides long-term socio-economic benefits by creating a sustainable commercial bee farming enterprise. It offers an alternative economic activity, generating income and jobs to reduce poverty and improve living standards in the Marikana communities. BeeAfrican’s role includes training participants in beekeeping, hive care, as well as farm and business management.

Empowerment Through Education

BeeAfrican goes beyond honey production. We are committed to teaching young people sustainable beekeeping practices and the importance of bees in our ecosystem. In April 2024, BeeAfrican helped establish the pan-African Bee Academy at the University of Venda, focusing on bee conservation and commercial beekeeping. The academy offers a six-month accredited training programme, with a pan-African orientation, making it accessible and relevant to local communities, accessible to the unemployed, elderly, and those without higher education, including Grade 12 graduates. With 70% hands-on training, it prepares participants to start their own beekeeping enterprises, enhancing their livelihoods and providing formal recognition and further educational opportunities.
